Alpine: LOW
Treeline: LOW
Below Treeline: LOW
Travel Advisory: Spring like conditions are but a memory and winter has returned to the mountains. 5 cm of new snow is now overlying a variable melt freeze crust that is not likely to soften up in the alpine terrain. This crust will make for fast but challenging traveling – watch for old, frozen avalanche debris.
Avalanche Activity: You may see some soft slabs begin to build during the day if the moderate SE winds continue. Any glimpse of sunshine will cause the new snow on solar aspects to moisten and to sluff. Cornices are always a hazard at this time of year and they may have become brittle with the cooling temperatures.
Snowpack: Below the melt freeze crust the old snow is moist. The overnight snow seems to have bonded well to the crust, although there are shears within the new snow in some wind transported deeper pockets. The forecast continuing cool temperatures should eventually permeate deeper into the snowpack and further solidify the already firm crust.
Weather: Clouds and flurries are forecast to prevail today and tonight. The airmass should begin to dry out on Tuesday and a mix of sun and cloud is expected for Wednesday and Thursday.
